Algae ecodesign that rethinks raw materials with Decathlon Advanced Design

XPLO 2042 explores algae-derived materials (“Phycotex”) in applications ranging from footwear midsoles to dyed textiles. The aim is to imagine how organic materials can replace conventional petrochemical-based plastics, aiming one day offering superior performance with minimal environmental impact.

Decathlon Advanced Design has a broad, ongoing initiative to integrate ecodesign and sustainability into its products. The XPLO 2042 project can be seen as part of this ethos,  an exploration of completely new bio-materials and material processes that push beyond incremental improvements (like recycled polyester) to rethink raw materials entirely.

A conceptual project

Although algae-based mass production isn’t mainstream yet, and ECPLO 2042 is as per today  a design fiction and concept research project, not something available for purchase on Decathlon’s commercial platforms.

A key piece in the project is a shoe prototype in collaboration with Samuel Tomatis and Anaïs Jarnoux  exploring the potential of algae through objects in the fields of sports, fashion, and mobility.

This shoe, inspired by Japanese geta, combines tradition and technology. Its midsole is made of algae, providing thermal insulation and shock absorption.
A network of copper wires, integrated between the inner and outer soles, allows for natural electrical conduction, promoting the dissipation of static charges accumulated by the body. The upper is made from recycled 360°nKnit mesh.

For several years, we have been working on the research and development of these new materials, Phycotex, in the laboratory. At the same time, we have validated all the techniques related to these materials so that they can be used in the fields of objects, interior design, accessories, fashion, and packaging. We are redefining the contours of contemporary tapestry by reinventing shapes, textures, and finishes to develop new forward-looking solutions.

Other prototypes shown under the XPLO umbrella include garments (like algae-dyed silk shirts and meditation cloaks), bags, and soft-material experiments. By placing these objects in narrative “capsules” or dioramas, the project aims to spark discussions about future materials and life-styles.
