An Irresistibly Joyful Collaboration For The Holidays: Gustaf Westman x IKEA

September 12, 2025

There’s something irresistibly joyful about the new IKEA VINTERFINT collection by Swedish designer Gustaf Westman x IKEA rolling out between Sept/Oct. 2025. It mixes tradition with surprise, colour with form, nostalgia with freshness. And it’s shaping up to be one of the most exciting holiday-home collections this season.

This collaboration was the perfect chance to overturn the traditional holiday aesthetic and bring in a sense of boldness and joy. This is how I picture the festive season: a new design, made for a new generation.

VINTERFINT is a limited edition, 12-piece range of tableware, lighting, and home accessories. This is Westman’s first time collaborating with another company on product design.

The goal: celebration without pretense. Celebration rethought!

IKEA and Westman asked: What does celebrating today mean? How can everyday moments be cherished, not only big holidays

The palette mixes classic festive colors (red, green) with unexpected hues like bubblegum pink and baby blue – both Western’s signature colors. Form-wise, there’s a playful contrast between sharp/structured and soft/rounded. Think: square edges with rounded wells in plates, spirals, bold curves – Westman is famous for his the squishy forms.

We looked into the signature pieces:

  • Meatball plate: Marks the 40th anniversary of IKEA’s famous Swedish meatball. It celebrates a Swedish staple and turns it into a design moment.

  • Cup & oversized saucer: Designed with mulled wine (“glögg”) in mind, but also with childhood memories — grandma’s biscuits during festive baking. The saucer is large so you can pair drink and treat in one.

  • Bouncy vase: A metal spiral forming an hourglass silhouette around a glass vessel. The spiral supports drooping flowers, adds humour, gives the object life through play in shape.

  • Lighting & candle objects: Candleholders and light fixtures that echo the same square-and-round motif; a portable lantern that becomes orbital; a modern twist on the Swedish candelabra tradition.

Let us have a trend-look on this collab:

Still being in the Experience Economy where Playfulness has a big storytelling, this collection also reflect every element of the almost absurd and impossible because of how we perceive the Holiday season – maybe more thoughtful, mindful, calm and traditional, and these are all attributes we would typically see in another color palette. But even celebrations are evolving and design can lead the way in making home life more joyful, expressive, inclusive. The idea of reinventing tradition is a huge part that goes into another trend direction, which is Heritage and Newstalgia we’re also exploring in other articles.
