Here are some retrospective impressions of my trend talk and the CMF workshop I recently gave at the Design Post in Cologne, Germany, with a focus on the Crystalline theme. We looked in three directions and worked afterward in a fun session with 25 participants on how to translate the learnings into actual projects, having loads of color swatches and material samples in the room courtesy of our materioteca.
“Sensory Utopia” is the leitmotiv for two Wellbeing directions we developed for our current CMF 2025 trend report.
The umbrella term refers to the involvement or stimulation of multiple senses simultaneously. It implies an experience or approach that engages more than one sensory modality, such as sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, from a Utopian perspective, as we wish to be there but hardly live these experiences daily.
CRYSTALLINE
The Crystalline theme captivates the senses and transcends the ordinary. Ethereal design aesthetics usher in an era of lightness and wonder, enveloping spaces and objects in an otherworldly charm that delights the observer.
This look & feel is achieved through a carefully curated combination of a barely-there color palette, sheer fabrics, iridescent materials, and abundant translucency with glass, acrylics, resin, and epoxy.
The Crystalline theme is soft and reminiscent of virtual/digital aesthetics but does not include former colder shades such as electric blue, vital greens, and purples seen during 2021-23.
