The flamboyant organic glasses by Helle Mardahl represent an ode to the artist’s childhood memories of her frequent visits to the fantastic candy shops in Copenhagen, when she used to dream of creating her own exclusive and sophisticated sweetshop.
Copenhagen-based Helle Mardahl is an artist and designer whose work ranges from sculpture and painting to fashion and interior design and is marked by “a sense of ornate lavishness, extravagance and flamboyance”.
A great attention is put on how materials relate to each other as well as the contrast between organic shapes and hard materials. The “Candy Collection”, showcased for the first time at 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen, embodies this philosophy. Her richly colored designs have a natural appearance; they are fragile yet robust.
To Helle, glass is just the most beautiful material to work with. Also, Mardahl chooses to work closely with talented craftsmen to be able to maintain a personal contact with the artwork from start to finish and, doing so, ensure the faithfulness to her storytelling and aesthetics.
The “Candy Collection” is filled with possibilities engaging all senses: every piece is unique and one-off with colors, shapes and textures created to activate rich and playful memories.
The collection of flamboyant organic glasses includes a variety of shapes, inspired by the diverse sweets available at a traditional confectioner’s shop. Each piece is hand-blown by Mardahl, a process that allows each unique object to have its own shape and personality.
