Mineral Potential by Yixing Fang

Yixing Fang-Mineral Potential-Eclectic Trends

It’s not a secret that we are big fans of artistic ceramics here on Eclectic Trends. So it won’t be a big surprise to you that we fell in love with the gorgeous work of Mineral Potential by Yixing Fang – and her gorgeous objects that show a beautiful interplay of bronze and ceramics.

Born in China she now lives and works in London. Her successful academic background is summed up in a few sentences, but the narrative: ‚View my portfolio. Then, let my materials tell your story.‘ really stands for itself! We followed her piece of advice and look what we found:

The initial point to her artwork was the question whether she could combine traditional Chinese craft techniques with industrially manufactured materials to create innovative future artifacts and new design outputs.

Through this project, I am interested in how we can utilise Tonglings industrially produced minerals and metals to create valuable craft artifacts which have deep meaning to the local people that once again celebrate Tonglingâ’s rich cultural heritage and preserve it for future generations. They could also contain the local people’s best regards.

Tongling is known as “China’s Ancient Bronze Capital”, a traditional Chinese city famed for it’s prolific deposits of mineral industrial mining, smelting and processing of copper and bronze. Over the intervening years the city has experienced a fast industrial growth and a complete decline of its ancient metal handicrafts and also its artisan metalworkers. At the same time, some traditional meaningful customs disappeared.

We really like the successful and beautiful outcome of Yixing Fang’s project, not only on the artistic level, but also from the strongly sustainable aspect.
