Review: Think Tank of Innovative Materials (Masterclass)

Think Tank of Innovative Materials by Gudy Herder

Here is the review of our first Think Tank of Innovative Materials set in a renovated parking garage where lots of shootings take place (hence the no shoes policy in the cyclorama;) here in Barcelona.

This one-day masterclass is designed for creatives eager to explore the latest material trends firsthand. During the session, participants engage in interactive discussions, hands-on exploration of materials, and collaborative brainstorming to generate innovative ideas for their application. It’s a Think Tank to reflect, discuss, play, experiment.

These were the different chapters of the program:

1// CMF Trends for 2025 – a trend talk

The room was full of innovative materials (around 200), the most sustainable. We started with a trend talk on three CMF trends for 2025. We saw how Well-Being would look & feel in 2025, observed how relevant color is for Urbanization, and got to see and touch bio-based elements in Neo Ecology.

Each trend came with a material board that everybody could touch and explore; at Eclectic Trends we are fans of translating research into tangible materials always.

It has been truly revealing for me to see Gudy in action. To understand how trends are generated and why… and to get to know these in depth through the projects of the artists who are revolutionizing the sector right now. It’s incredibly refreshing and nourishing to listen to her talk, something I will definitely repeat from now on whenever I can!

2// A Tactile Experience with guest speaker Clara Sullà

We will delve into the world of colors and textures from a fresh, vibrant perspective, deciphering their impact on various customer segments.

Clarà Sullà has a background in textile art and design. She offered insights drawn from her experiences with museums, galleries, and a disruptive theater company being responsible for their costume design. Today, she focuses on sustainable textile solutions and acoustics, still using artisanal and artistic approaches.

Today, she elaborates on wonderful textile installations within acoustic comfort. During that day, she invited us to enjoy a textile exploration, blindfolded smelling, and touching materials when working to evoke a new sense of what can be done with natural elements that become textiles.

And everybody was lucky enough to have her samples in the material box, too (big hit!).

3// CMF Evaluation + Emotional Materiality

How do you sense a material? How do you sense color? We would work in groups to evaluate different perceptions of the same material and then randomly get together to work with very different materials on future projects such as offices for a gaming company, a Japanese restaurant in the shape of sushi, an experimental retail spot for skin care, a well-being-focused dental clinic, etc.

All projects focussed on the new materials found in the room.

4// Round Table

Between all product designers, interior designers, color experts, and architects, we wanted to have some time to discuss and exchange opinions on questions such as.

  • Under which criteria do you choose materials for your projects?
  • How do you decide on color palettes for your projects? What methodology do you work with?
  • How relevant are choices on sustainable materials? How much demand is already on the market?
  • How much influence has your client had on a project when working with you? Where to adapt and where to draw a line?

It was a very interesting conversation in which cultural influences and the vision of a creative studio took different stands. We learned from each other how decisions can be made in different contexts.

Attending Electric Trends’ Think Tank has truly been a transformative journey for me. Gudy’s nurturing environment fosters fearless exploration, encouraging us to push boundaries and reimagine possibilities. This masterclass has not only broadened my creative horizons but also instilled in me a newfound confidence in experimenting with cutting-edge materials shaping today’s market. I eagerly anticipate embracing Gudy’s visionary approach in my future endeavors, eager to uncover fresh perspectives and reinterpret the world around me.

5// Materials Box to take home

Ah, the famous materials box! Each participant received a curated material box, including innovative and sustainable samples. Some materials were made only for this session by material providers who were excited to participate in our session. We have eleven providers and 23 samples in the box.

I had the immense privilege of attending the Think Tank given by Gudy Herder.

From start to finish, the session was a revelation in many ways, exceeding all my expectations.

What stands out most about Gudy is her impeccable methodology, her approach to teaching this class was one-of-a-kind. Her passion and dedication were evident in every word and every explanation, so inspiring all of us present. Thank you Gudy for such an enriching experience!
