We get often asked how Pantone makes that decision that influences several creative industries during one year. The Color Of the Year 2022 Very Peri results from a long process.
As the happiest and warmest of all blue hues, PANTONE® 17-3938 Very Peri introduces an empowering mix of newness. A vibrant periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet-red undertone, Very Peri, blends the faithfulness and constancy with the energy and excitement of red.
Since 1999, the Color Institue aims the Color of the Year to be a messenger.
We are in a much better place now, though we still live in a unique environment. Our mindset and behavior have changed; we might say that a large part of society now aims to live more responsibly.
Very Peri, displaying carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit, helps us embrace an unaltered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision. It’s an empowering hue that embraces a joyous attitude.
“The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer.” – Leatrice Eisemann, VP of the Pantone Color Institute

WHAT HAS BEEN DONE DIFFERENTLY FOR THE FIRST TIME
The Color Institute has created a new color to be announced as Color of the Year as opposed to picking an existing hue from their color palettes that is directly in line with the message they want to send. It’s a new creation produced for the first time in their history. The design of Very Peri has been a close collaboration between color scientists and the Color Institute and reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place.
As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions, the complexity of this new blue that comes infused by red, highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us.
THE WHY OF THE HERO IMAGE
“The image we selected to be our hero image for Pantone Color of the Year 2022 is more abstract and futuristic. This was intentional as there are many unknowns happening, and the abstractness part of where we are right now.
As we examine the unknown and begin to work our way out of the unease, reimagining and rewriting our lives, we are not entirely sure yet where we are headed.
Together with the filaments, the orbs also convey the idea of movement and motion, reassuring us that we are indeed moving ahead. We see promise in the future.” – Leatrice Eisemann, VP of the Pantone Color Institute

THE INFLUENCE OF THE METAVERSE
Very Pero comes also as a result of considering several digital aspects. Creativity is now established in a whole new way linked to technology. We spend more time engaging with the digital world through our computer and VR headsets, which surprisingly have fostered a more intimate relationship with technology. How could that conduct not influence design decisions and the choice of color? Very Peri is empowering and also relates to an abstract and futuristic universe.

According to a theory of the biologist E.O. Wilson, Biophilia is an innate and genetically determined affinity of human beings with the natural world.
Lanzavecchia+Wai create Biophilic Futures for Yo2, which echoes the rich history of all biophilic decors. This collection seeks to bring those beneficial effects into contemporary interiors in the form of an imaginary futuristic forest where Human Beings are in complete harmony with nature. The artwork depicts city forests teeming with life, where man, plants, and animals will experience a beneficial symbiosis.
“With these rugs, we imagine ourselves in a new interior of a house amongst the trees, from which we gaze upon the future green city. A forest of utopic perfection where human beings and nature coexist in symbiosis in peace and balance.” – Lanzavecchia + Wai

You have a rather optimistic view on the matter! I’ve read a commentary from another colour and trend expert who believes that the way neuroscience sees it, this shade of purple is a compensator for the feeling of frustration from not being able to fulfill ourselves and live more fully during the pandemic ;D
Actually, there is not much of our view described here but most of the words come from Letrice Eisemann and her explanation on how and why they chose Very Peri. Thanks for sharing another point of view, it’s always enriching!
