Top 4 Installations | Milan Design Week 2024

Top 5 installations seen at Milan Design Week 2024 - Masquespacio

Every year at this time, we write an article about the installations we visited and loved the most. Our Top 4 installations this year at Milan Design Week 2024 are:

1. Formation 02 by Samuel Ross x Kohler

Terminal 02, inspired by the dramatic impacts of moving water, is an immersive experience with a network of industrial pipes in Samuel Ross’s signature color, offering visitors the opportunity to witness the flow of water in different shapes and levels. The experience brings together ideas of flow and control, alongside discovery and play, through an aesthetic that utilizes elements of natural landscape with large stones contrasted by industrial-scale engineering.

Central to the installation is the global unveiling of Formation 02, a KOHLER® Eir smart toilet launched with 99 units, which is the second product from the Kohler x SR_A multiyear partnership.

The bold, brutalist form of the Formation 02 smart toilet aligns with the installation’s industrial aesthetics, while the historic Palazzo del Senato’s surrounding environment offers a beautiful juxtaposition of its classical architectural elements and the open sky above.

What made it special?

The narrative was on-point and necessary to fully understand the bold installation. Samuel Ross took care of pretty much everything, including the selection of the DJ and playlist of the opening night. It was a total concept and coherent in every detail.

2. Around the table by Masquespacio

Our friends at Masquespacio created an installation of different layers (literally) at Isola Design District to transcend the boundaries of design, art, and immersive experience. Cascading soft yellow fabrics serve as a tent and shield for an intimate setting around a table.

The color, light, and shadows surrounding a staged table change throughout the day. During the day, an exhibition is on display, and in the evening, a selected number of guests get together to enjoy a different experience. The Cylinder Lamps designed by the studio overlook other objects curated by Masquespacio.

What made it special?

Not only do the well-established brands create note-worthy shows, but anything Ana, Christophe, and their team touch is pretty special when it comes to color and materials use.

3. Porta by LASVIT

This is one of the installations that is difficult to capture in images, as the courtyard of Palazzo Isimbardi, where they were placed, is as relevant to the overall experience as the expo itself.

Glass-making brand Lasvit showcased large glass panels from a more artistic point of view, taking them out of the functional context. Art Director Maxim Velčovský redefines the relationship between glass and architecture with monumental pieces of fused glass.

Extremely hot melted glass is gently coaxed to relax, spread, and naturally take the shape of a specially designed form, guided solely by its weight and the subtle pull of gravity. Crafted in Europe’s largest glass kiln, this installation is a display of technical prowess and an illustration of the brand’s capabilities in terms of size and variability.

What made it special?

The contrast of heavy iron and translucent glass, combined with the mirror reflections and the ancient courtyard, which occasionally experiences steam, creates a multi-sensory experience on several levels.

4. Newfound Equilibrium by Samsung

Samsung Electronics showcases its user-centered design philosophy, Samsung Design Identity 5.0: Essential∙Innovative∙Harmonious.

If we look more closely at the product development process, design makes innovative technologies shine while technology makes design dreams a reality. Only when design and technology are in perfect harmony can we develop a product that provides genuine value to our users.

TM Roh – President and Head of Corporate Design Center at Samsung Electronics

Anchoring the multi-sensory experience, the immersive installation guides visitors through five spaces: “Essence,” “Innovation,” “Harmony,” “Infinite Dream” and “New Dawning.”

As visitors approach the screens in the spaces, translucent elements change into specific shapes and textures, and the shapes beyond the window appear as if they are approaching onlookers, allowing them to immerse themselves in the dream of an infinite future drawing nearer.

The viewer becomes part of the installations as human interaction is necessary to unfold the experience and invoke new visuals.

We have uploaded videos on Instagram in Highlights (MDW24_2). The clips are the only way to fully appreciate this installation, which was almost 100% video-based.

What made it special?

The installation was calm: Few people were there when we went. The restored, neat, and clean building was a nice respite after the industrial and baroque environments you visit throughout the design week. The visuals are beautiful; flying donuts and balloons bumping against a window from the outside were rather special. The textures in this digital world are so precise you want to touch the screen.
