Material Of The Month: Reindeer Moss

February 22, 2022

Our Material Of The Month series constantly searches for material that comes with a meaningful story. On this occasion, an entire list of characteristics makes this material truly special. The Reindeer Moss looks already spongy when you find it on the internet but feels much softer when you touch it. Nordgröna is inspired by Scandinavian nature and thoughtfully designs to increase the well-being of people who use their products. They specialize in renewable materials where possible; they are fully recyclable and last a lifetime.

The one fact that is most intriguing, however, is the brand mission of hand-picking the moss across an area of about 15.000km2. No more than 20% of the amount is picked at a time, and the area is not revisited again for at least 4-5 years.

After a preservation and color treatment, the lichen is no longer alive and will retain its shape, color, and texture. The natural and authentic Reindeer Moss is highly effective as a sound absorber (100%), fire-resistant, a natural humidity indicator ( it does and returns soft again above 35% of Relative Humidity-RH). And, last but not least: it comes maintenance-free:) No sunlight, watering, pruning is required.

The small Pixels on the materials board are little holders of Reindeer Moss which, when combined with others, can create a natural sound absorbing surface of any shape or size – you decide how to tailor it to your space and needs.
